Cobblers chairman Cardoza dismisses Jeffers link

THE Cobblers have rubbished reports linking them with a move for former England international striker Francis Jeffers.

The 29-year-old, whose 500,000-a-year contract at Sheffield Wednesday came to an end last week, was reported in the national media to be in talks at Sixfields.

Both the Daily Mail and the Express ran the story yesterday, which was also carried by the Sheffield Star in its evening edition.

But Town chairman David Cardoza says he has no idea where the rumour has come from, and was quick to dismiss it.

"I don't know anything about it," he said. "I was quite surprised to read it in one of the papers. It was news to me.

"There's nothing it in whatsoever. You might see more players like that coming down to this level this summer, though."

Jeffers is a player whose catalogue of injuries have meant he is in the twilight of his career - and that hardly fits the criteria for signings at Sixfields this summer.

Manager Ian Sampson wants to put together a young side that can develop over the medium term into a team to be reckoned with.

"Sammo wants to get a young team together that can grow and mature as a group," said Cardoza. "But we know we need to get a couple of experienced players in as well.

"It will be about getting the balance right and I'm confident he (Sampson) will be able to do that with the players he brings in this summer."

Meanwhile, Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen have confirmed they have inquired about signing Cobblers player of the year Adebayo Akinfenwa.

The striker has reportedly attracted the interest of seven clubs, with 'three or four' of them making concrete offers.

Akinfenwa's agent Dean Baker is confident he will secure at least a 'decent league one' club for his client.

"There has been an inquiry from Aberdeen but no offer as yet," said Baker. "He is out of contract having turned down a future deal with Northampton.

"I've had seven inquiries and three or four offers. I've had a few bits and pieces from other SPL clubs.

"Aberdeen would be on his radar if there is an offer. We will see if they come back in.

"Abebayo is on holiday at the moment and is away for another week. But he is quite relaxed about it.

"He knows he had a good season and won't struggle to get a decent league one club or possibly one in the SPL.

"When he gets back he will probably look to do something prior to the end of June."
