Cobblers are in hot water
The Cobblers have been hit with a charge for failing to control their players in last Friday's defeat to Aldershot – and it could lead to the club being deducted league points.
Town have been charged with a breach of FA rule E20 (a) – 'failure to ensure its players and/or officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour.'
It is the first time Northampton have been faced with such an indictment, while it is the second one Aldershot have received in the past three weeks.
The charge relates to the melee that ensued in the 19th minute of the game that stemmed from Scott Donnelly's challenge on John Johnson and involved players from both sides and from both sets of substitutes, who were warming up nearby.
The Cobblers had Adebayo Akinfenwa booked for his part in the tussle, which was all captured on camera, as was Anthony Straker of the visiting team.
The clash came just seven minutes after Kevin Thornton had been shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge.
The midfielder has been banned for the next three games, a suspension that has not been challenged by the Cobblers.
They have until March 3 to respond to today's charge, the most extreme punishment for which is a points deduction, although there has been no precedent of this happening.
The most likely outcome is a warning or a fine, which is likely to be around the 3,000 mark, although in many cases this is suspended pending future good behaviour.
