Cobblers players to be offered new deals
Northampton Town have confirmed they will open contract talks with some of their players in the next week, as manager Ian Sampson sets about moulding his team for next season.
As it stands, the Town boss has only got four players on the books for the 2010-11 campaign – first-choice keeper Chris Dunn, 34-year-old striker Steve Guinan, rookie forward Courtney Herbert and defender Chris McCready, who is currently on loan at Tranmere Rovers.
Several members of the current squad have options for a second year but key players like Adebayo Akinfenwa are clean out of contract in the summer.
The team's recent form has been a result of several performances that are likely to have caught the scouts' eyes, the most notable perhaps being Ryan Gilligan's contribution of 10 goals from midfield.
Considering how many players will be free agents in the summer, the advice to anyone offered a deal at this stage has to be to give it serious thought.
Sampson is confident of getting a few of his emerging team to put pen to paper in the next fortnight as he looks to carve out a Sixfields dynasty.
"I'll be talking to a few of the players in the next couple of weeks and be making some offers," he said.
"They're not necessarily the big names in the squad but they are the priority signings that we want to get tied up."
