Cobblers chairman's attack on wages
David Cardoza says Northampton Town are more stable than 90 per cent of other league clubs.
But the Town chairman feels football will never get its house in order until player wages are reduced across the board to levels that can be sustained in the lower leagues.
Northampton have one of the biggest playing budgets in Coca-Cola League Two, and it has been increased since Ian Sampson took over as manager to allow him to make his own additions to what is still, in the majority, Stuart Gray's squad.
The combination of higher costs and lower-than-planned-for attendances is a worrying one, but Cardoza has reassured supporters that the club is on a solid footing.
The financial crises at Portsmouth, Southend United and Cardiff City, and the eye-watering levels of debt at Manchester United have set alarm bells ringing across the sport.
Cardoza hopes the money troubles will act as a wake-up call and lead to clubs being better run in the future.
"We're a league two club in a recession so we couldn't be in a worse situation," said the chairman. "But we are very stable compared to 90 per cent of other clubs.
"We are fully up to date with our tax – there are clubs out there who are not and that definitely gives them an advantage over us.
"In a sense you do get punished for being prudent, but football is a mess and you only have to look at what's happening at a number of clubs in all leagues to see that.
"Hopefully people will wake up and realise that it can't go on the way it has."
