Cobblers boss Boothroyd: I am under no pressure to sell

NO BIDS - no clubs have as yet made an offer for Cobblers top scorer Adebayo Akinfenwa

Aidy Boothroyd has confirmed he is under no pressure to sell any members of his in-form Cobblers squad during the January transfer window.

And the club has received no bids yet for any of their players, including leading goalscorer Adebayo Akinfenwa, who has scored 14 times already this season.

Boothroyd opted to go into the season with a small squad comprising high-quality footballers who would be able to play the vast majority of games - Chris Hackett and Joe Widdowson being the best examples of this policy.

It is one that has started to reap dividends recently, with the team compiling the best home record in npower League Two and moving to within a point of the play-off places ahead of tomorrow’s (Sat) trip to Chesterfield.

With such form will come external interest in the team and there is a feeling at Sixfields, where the club have identified two transfer targets but are not pursuing them with any great desire, that the transfer window is more of a distraction than anything useful this season.

But Boothroyd is under no pressure from the board to bring in any revenue by selling any of the players who have helped put the side in a position to challenge to go up.

“I’m lucky that I’ve got a chairman who has spent a huge amount of money on the club but who isn’t in a rush to get that back,” he said.

“We have a budget and I’ve got to keep to that by moving one or two things around but at the same time he is not in a rush to cash in on any of our players.

“In an ideal world you want to be in a good position in the league come the end of March and then you’ll always got that decision to make about players.

“What I do strongly believe when you look at our squad now is that there is a lot of value in there.

“There are a lot of players in there that other teams might like the look of and those teams can phone me up and ask. Then we’ll say yes or no.”
