COBBLERS: Bayo's 'going nowhere'
Cobblers boss Ian Sampson has categorically stated that leading scorer Adebayo Akinfenwa will be a Northampton Town player when the January transfer window closes.
The Cobblers boss was speaking after watching his team sign off for 2009 with a 0-0 draw at Barnet, a result that extends the club's unbeaten run to four games.
Akinfenwa had one of two great goalscoring chances in a match Town will probably feel they should have won, having dominated 10-man Barnet for most of the contest.
But the big man still has the kind of record that catches the scouts' eyes, and while Sampson is anticipating some offers for his number 10, he maintains Akinfenwa will still be at Sixfields in February.
"I would expect there to be interest from other clubs because he's our main striker and he scores a goal every two games," said the Town boss.
"He's out of contract in the summer and I'm sure a few people will be interested in him but he will definitely be a Northampton player in February. I don't need a crystal ball, he's going nowhere.
"There have been no phone calls so far, he's in our plans and we need him at this club.
"The chairman is of the same thinking, we're at the wrong end of the table and we need our best players."
Sampson highlighted the missed chance by Akinfenwa – and one from substitute Billy McKay – as being the key moments of an Underhill draw that really should have been an away win.
The manager was generally happy with how his men performed, especially as it kept the unbeaten run rumbling on.
"It's better than losing four in a row but we're disappointed not to have won the game, especially with Barnet being reduced to 10 men," he said.
"We were camped in their half and we had a few chances but we didn't get a break in their box.
"We're four unbeaten now and that will give us a lot of confidence going into the Bournemouth game this weekend.
"I would have said the chance Billy McKay had when he put it over the bar and the one where Bayo (Akinfenwa) turned in the box were good chances.
"If Bayo had turned the other way then he would have had an open goal, six yards out, so they were two good chances."
