Chris Ashton on England standby

Northampton Saints' Guinness Premiership top try-scorer Chris Ashton could miss tomorrow's crucial east midlands derby after being called up by England.

Winger Mark Cueto was yesterday unable to train after being struck down with a stomach bug, and Ashton has hurriedly been called up to cover.

If Cueto is ruled out of England's Six Nations clash with Grand Slam champions Ireland, 22-year-old Ashton could win his first England cap.

Or Martin Johnson could promote Ben Foden from the bench to perform on the wing. Foden played for England on the wing against the Barbarians last season.

If Ashton does win his first cap it will complete a meteoric rise for the former rugby league player. Ashton feared he might have to give up union after a disastrous first season in the Premiership when he scored just one try.

But this season he has found his feet and is the top flight's leading scorer with 11 tries. If Ashton does not play for England, his a late call-up could still rule him out of Saints' top of the table clash with Leicester.
