Charlotte and Jess lead way for girls

The second race in the highly-competitive West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League took place at Leamington Spa.

A record 63 Rugby & Northampton AC athletes aged from nine to 16 competed over a challenging cross-country course with outstanding results that move the team overall into second place with only Royal Sutton Coldfield ahead of them.

There were five top 10 finishers across the age groups; U13 boys Billy Bowman-Shaw (6th) and George Goodwin (9th) charged through the field to secure good points for the team.

The girls again dominated the older age groups; Charlotte Inwood, despite recovering from illness, clocked up her second win of the season and was followed in by Jess Dimmock in second place in the U15 age group.

Emily Waugh improved on her previous third place to take second in the under-17 women's race.

Improvements on previous race placings were in evidence throughout the age groups, with almost half of athletes improving their last race position, the top improvers were:

U11 girls Charlotte Murphy - 11 places; U13 girls Daisy Cummings - 24 places; U15 girls Eleanor Barnes - 19 places; U17 women Emma McGowan - 15 places; U13 boys Billy Bowman-Shaw - 5 places; U15 boys Robert Male - 10 places

Sixteen athletes competed for the first time in this league and showed their potential for the rest of the season, these included Mary Hughes who led home the U13 girls to finish 26th in the biggest field of the day, Hannah Furniss 42nd in U11 girls and impressive run from Ben Smith 11th in U11 boys.
