Capel: Steelbacks will keep focus despite wash-out
David Capel insists Northamptonshire Steelbacks will stay focused as they prepare to take on the Glamorgan Dragons in Cardiff tonight.
It was frustration all round in Taunton yesterday as only five overs were possible in the clash with Somerset Sabres.
The County looked to be well on their way with Ian Harvey and Rob White guiding them to 49 without loss. But a thunderstorm and heavy rain ensured no more play was possible.
The no-result means a point apiece and took both sides onto 11 points in the Mid/West/Wales Division in the Twenty20 Cup – with the Steelbacks back on top.
And Capel admitted that was a decent place to be as they look to take a giant step towards the quarter-finals against the Dragons under floodlights at the Swalec Stadium – weather permitting of course.
"It's never a bad thing to be on top rather than in fifth place. But we will get to Cardiff and try to get the points we need," the head coach said.
"It's the old clich of controlling the controllables. We can't control the weather.
"But what we can do is that if we get there and get the opportunity to play then we have to take into account all the conditions, take the day for what it is, play our best cricket and try to come away with the right result.
"We have to be professional and do things properly and make sure we are well prepared. We have to see what the day brings. We can't predict anything.
"But we will be doing our best to get the right result that everybody wants."
Reflecting on last night's abandonment, Capel added: "Both teams will be feeling the same.
"We are in exactly the same position.
"If it had been a five-over thrash then whoever had come off second wouldn't have been particularly happy.
"So maybe that was the fairest result out of a day like that and we just all had to run with what the umpires felt and they felt it wasn't safe.
"It's been a good mental exercise because of working out the limitations and fielding restrictions involved in a five-over game.
"So to go through that 'what-if' scenario may not have been a bad thing because you never know when it might come up again."
