Paul and Tina Broderick saw their hopes of winning the national indoor mixed pairs title end in the second round at the finals event at Northampton & District.
The Wellingborough pair were the first county players in action at the championships which are at Northampton for the next three weeks.
The event was opened by the Mayor of Northampton, Cllr Jamie Lane, before the chairman of Northampton & District, David Masters, handed the green over to the president of the English Indoor Association, Lindsay Warner.
During the days of the championships at Northampton, five national titles will be decided.
And the Brodericks began their bid to repeat their 2010 triumph in the mixed pairs with a 23-16 win over Linda Bryson/Chris Cook (Moonfleet).
But their challenge ended a few hours later as they lost 19-16 to Amy Banes/Mark Johnson (Swale).
Tina Broderick will hope for better fortune in the over-50s ladies triples when she and Wellingborough team-mates Joyce George and Di Allen begin their challenge against the rink of Sue Osborne (Bristol) tomorrow (1.30pm start).
The first county interest in the men’s national finals is also tomorrow when the Kingsthorpe rink of Pete Maloy/Jim McKee/Mick Sharpe takes on the Grimwood rink of Colin Malcolm in the over-50s triples (9am start).
However, Sharpe and McKee will not be at the finals of the main draw triples after they and club-mate Andrew Manton lost 18-14 to Rob White/Alan Ramscar/Dominic Graham (Northampton & District) in the area final.
In the inter-club Denny Plate semi-final, Kingsthorpe will play Copeland at Falcon on April 14 (9.30am).
Meanwhile, the County under-25s have rescheduled their final against Devon in the National Double-Rink for February 25 at Melton & District (1.30pm start).
County team: Rink one: M Wordingham, C Johnson, C Height, J Walker. Rink two: S Gamble, R Knox, C Cinato, M Pownall. Reserve: A Linnell.
The men’s county competitions are at the quarter-final stage.

Connor Cinato (Desborough) and David Walker (Kingsthorpe) are through to the semi-finals of the under-25s singles.
