Boss Dunion boosts his defensive options

Keeping things tight at the back would appear to be the name of the game for Rothwell Town in Southern League Division One Midlands this year.

Boss Rob Dunion has unveiled five new defenders and a goalkeeper in his first wave of summer signings.

Former Corby Town men Dominic Hallows, Tom Guiney and Steve Julian have arrived at Cecil Street from Stamford, Atherstone Town and S&L respectively.

Paul Rice returns to the club from Desborough Town and youngster Alex Phillips, who can play at the back or in midfield, has joined from the Rushden & Diamonds academy.

The new man between the sticks is another from Corby, Lee Crockett, who joins direct from the Steelmen and the Rockingham Triangle influence

continues in midfield with the arrival of Brett Darby from Unibond League side Quorn.

The eighth new addition is another midfielder, Chris Goodman from

Midland Alliance side Barwell.

"Added to this is that we've also got Bobby White signed on permanently now after he played on loan for us for the final few months of last season and we've kept Martin Flannigan too so we're not short of defensive options," said Dunion.

Experienced players like Robbie Maddox, Kevin Byrne and Shaun Goodall will remain with the Bones while the three main departures are goalkeeper Alex Malong, defender Mark Hackett and striker Fazel Koriya.

Koriya has gone to fellow Southern League side Bedworth United, Hackett

has dropped to UCL Division One with Irchester United while Malong was released.

But while the Bones now appear much stronger defensively, Dunion admits he still needs to address matters at the other end of the field.

Goalscoring was the Bones' Achilles heel last year as they only just avoided relegation. And Dunion has so far had no luck in bringing in a new striker.

"I've spoken to lots of players but the money they want is atrocious," he said.

"Everyone seems to think Rothwell have got lots of money to throw around this year because we've had people come in and invest in us but that's not the case."

Dunion has also re-organised his backroom staff with Simon Underwood taking over as first-team coach, Gordon Kyle being retained and Sean Allen becoming the goakeeping coach.

The Bones, meanwhile, have confirmed their pre-season fixtures ahead of the new campaign.

Their home games are against Rushden & Diamonds (Tuesday, 7.45pm), Corby Town for the Newlands Trophy (July 9, 7.45pm), North Leigh (July 11, 3pm), Brackley Town (August 1, 3pm) and Quorn (August 8, 3pm).

Their first away friendly is at Deeping Rangers on July 18 (3pm), with trips to Rothwell Corinthians in the Peter Johnson Trophy (July 21, 7.45pm), Desborough Town (August 4, 7.45pm) and Whitworths (August 10, 7.45pm) all following on.
