Chris Wilder praised his Cobblers players for getting the Sixfields crowd off their feet as they completed a second successive victory.

Town lifted themselves off the bottom of Sky Bet League Two with a 2-1 win over Southend United secured through goals from Mathias Doumbe and Chris Hackett.

The gap to safety remains five points but Wilder was delighted to defeat a play-off chasing side and secure a third win in the team’s past four outings.

“It was a tight game against a very good side and it had a little bit of everything really,” he said. “Southend surprised us with their shape at first and they didn’t allow us to play at all in the first half.

“But we got to grips with it and I thought we got better as the game went on. The substitutes we brought into the game managed to put them under a bit of pressure too.

“Gradually we wore them down and we could have nicked another one in the last 15 minutes of the match but it’s a great effort and a very good result for us.

“We got the crowd off their feet with our committed performance and that is always pleasing as a manager.”

Doumbe’s goal was a virtual replica of the one he scored against Hartlepool on Saturday, a powerful header at the back post.

It came from a Hackett corner and manager Wilder feels the team’s delivery at set plays has been one of their biggest areas of improvement under his guidance.

“To get goals from set-pieces you need quality delivery and players with desire to put their heads on the end of it,” he said.

“We’ve got both of those things in the team and I think they’ve improved since I’ve been here - they should do with Chris Hackett and Darren Carter in the side.”
