Boje happy as Northamptonshire take a break
A week-long break for the Northants first-team comes at a welcome time – around the halfway point of an already frenetic season.
The helter-skelter nature of the Friends Provident Trophy and Twenty20 Cup has had the Steelbacks charging around the country with half-a-dozen LV County Championship games thrown in.
So now, with seven days until the next action, it is a reasonable time to take stock of what has happened so far.
"I'm quite happy," is skipper Nicky Boje's initial assessment.
"It's a nice time to have a little break. It's been a busy season already and, when you look at what is still to come, it is good to get away, spend a little time with the family and recharge the batteries a bit.
"Looking back, we didn't have a good 50-over competition. We started badly and then couldn't quite catch up.
"But the Twenty20 has gone really well. It has been excellent by the guys – the way they have achieved the objectives we set out for them.
"It was the aim to finish first in our group and have a home quarter-final.
"In terms of the club that is probably the most important competition – especially with the EPL and such next year.
"But the players want to be successful in all the forms.
"In the four-day game we've struggled with injuries a little bit and maybe not quite had the luck.
"But, although we are in seventh at the moment, there are only six points between us and second.
"If we can get some guys back to full fitness and put one or two wins together we will be right back in there.
"I really still believe we can push for promotion.
"It would be nice to prove to people that we're not just a Twenty20 side."
Boje confessed that finishing top of Midlands/Wales/West division is probably his highlight of the season so far.
But he has also taken pleasure in seeing the younger members of the squad coming through.
