Akinfenwa told: We definitely need you!
Ryan Gillighan is praying that striker Adebayo Akinfenwa will be fit to face Cheltenham Town a week on Saturday to help fire Northampton Town to an opening day victory.
A Bayo-less Town have struggled to hit the net in pre-season, not managing a goal in the four times they have played on English soil this summer.
That has provided boss Stuart Gray with cause for concern ahead of the big kick-off, when Town will entertain the Robins at Sixfields.
And Gilligan says the simple remedy is to get Akinfenwa fit in order for the Cobblers to start hitting the net.
"We're nearly there," said Gilligan on his side's problems in front of goal.
"It is just a case of tweaking a few things and taking that chance and maybe we will end up with a 1-0 win rather than a 1-0 defeat.
"We're all hoping he (Akinfenwa) will be there for us on August 9.
"I think he is a bit sore at the moment, he had a jab in his leg the other day but we are all hoping he will be available.
"He was a massive player for us at the end of last season, he has a big physical presence and obviously with the likes of Leon Constantine, Colin Larkin and Ian Henderson doing well in pre-season, it
will be a good problem for the manager to have come Cheltenham."
Gilligan admits Gray's men have missed the big forward in their pre-season workouts, with the Town frontline having nothing like the presence it does when a fully-fit Akinfenwa leads the line.
And he says the former Swansea City striker must be on the teamsheet for the opening day encounter with Cheltenham if he is fit and ready.
"We have missed him," added Gilligan.
"He was a big player for us last season and he is a character. He is a bubbly character and you always see that around the training ground.
"As long as he is fit for the start of the season then I think the manager has got to play him, especially with regards to his physical presence.
"Then it is a case of picking the right man to play with
him."
