Fabio Capello handed a first England start to Theo Walcott in the World Cup qualifier with Andorra - but it was Chelsea ace Joe Cole who came to England's rescue.
The Arsenal forward had only previously made two substitute appearances for his country - against Hungary in May 2006 and against Trinidad & Tobago in June.

Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott and Stewart Downing also came into in as Capello made four changes from the line-up which drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic last month.

However, England were unable to find a way through in the first half and were roundly jeered as they left the pitch at half-time.

Fabio Capello put on Emile Heskey and Cole for Downing and Jermaine Defoe and Cole immediately proved his worth by putting England ahead.

The Chelsea man rifled home from six yards after Frank Lampard's freekick reached Cole via Lescott.

And he made it 2-0 after 55 minutes after running on to finish off a Wayne Rooney pass.

It was hardly an impressive performance, but at least it was job done ahead of the big clash away to Croatia on Wednesday.
