Arsenal captain William Gallas escaped being branded with an own goal as France's World Cup campaign got off to a losing start.
France, embarrassed by their effort at Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, trailed Austria with Gallas originally attributed with scoring the second home goal three minutes before half-time in Vienna.

However, the goal was later taken away from him and credited to Austrian midfielder Rene Aufhauser.

The French were already behind 1-0 to a Marc Janko effort after just nine minutes but Sidney Govou gave them hope by pulling a goal back after 61 minutes.

However, Andreas Ivanschitz fired home a third Austria goal in the 73rd minute from the penalty spot to secure a 3-1 victory.
