Northamptonshire legend Allan Lamb says England look a 'total shambles' after their Headingley Test defeat against South Africa.

England skipper Michael Vaughan admitted the selecttion for the second Test 'looked confused' after Darren Pattinson was called up to replace Notts team-mate Ryan Sidebottom despite playing just 11 first-class matches and Paul Collingwood was dropp
ed with out-of-form Tim Ambrose moving up to six.

The changes backfired as England slumped to a 10-wicket defeat and with two Tests left, starting with Edgbaston next Thursday, Lamb can't see Vaughan's side coming back.

South African-born Lamb, who scored 14 centuries for England in 79 Tests, said: "England need to forget about what happened and move on. There is no use in blaming each other, Michael Vaughan is blaming the selectors – it seems to be a total shambles at the moment."

The former Northants and England captain says Vaughan needs to stop worrying about selection issues and focus on the next Test and scoring some runs.

Vaughan has scored just 23 runs in the series, and Lamb said: "I think Vaughan is under presure going into the next Test. He hasn't scored any runs and those comments he has made haven't helped. If England continue like this they have got no chance in the next Test."

Lamb is a fan of England's top five batters, but with Ambrose at six, feels they need to show more responsibility, especially in pressure
situations.

"When I saw Ian Bell come in against Australia I thought he looked a class act, but he has got to work it out upstairs. I thought he had come of age with that 199 at Lord's, but when the pressure is on that is when you have got to score your runs.

"I think the top five of England is as good a top five as anywhere in the world, but you have got to score the runs, that is the big thing."
