Cobblers won't benefit from Leeds promotion

Northampton Town chairman David Cardoza has confirmed that the club will not benefit should Leeds United win promotion.
Midfielder Bradley Johnson switched to Elland Road during the January transfer window and has helped Leeds to the verge of promotion.

However, even if Gary McAllister's side win at Wembley in the play-off final, Cardoza confirmed the deal is not subject to any further payment, scotching rumours Town would get a cash windfall should.

The chairman confirmed the fee was all up front – with a sell-on clause – and also revealed the amount then boss Dennis Wise paid for the youngster's services.

"The figure in the paper was £250,000 and that's not too far off the mark," he said.

"We don't like to disclose fees because if a selling club knows how much you've got from another deal then the price goes up.

"We never try to hide these things from our supporters, it's just a way of doing business."

The Cobblers would, however, have made some money had Lee Williamson reached the Premier League with Watford, though the Hornets' play-off capitulation to Hull City has scuppered that.
