STEVE GUINAN'S early second half header failed to inspire a Cobblers fightback as they tamely bowed out of the Johnstone's Paint Tropy at stadium:mk.
When the veteran hit man reduced the three goal deficit on 51 minutes it looked like game on but three strikes in the first half an hour of the game condemned Town to defeat.

Aaron Wilbraham and Sam Baldock with two goals were the men on target fo
r the league one high-flyers as Cobblers failed to impress during the opening stages.

Prolific striker Wilbraham put his side early on and his goal was added to by a double strike from Sam Baldock to as Cobblers failed to show any real class against a far superior opponent.

Wilbraham kicked off scoring on six minutes as he took advantage of some loose marking in the away defence to flick home a cross from the right hand side.

The away side looked flustered from the first whistle harking back to the dark days of earlier in the season and their lack of composure was causing real problems.

It looked only a matter of time before Paul Ince's side doubled their lead and Baldock duly obliged after racing clear and easily beating Chris Dunn.

A cricket score didn't look out of the question at this stage and then unbelievably Dunn and debutant Patrick Kanyuka both failed to deal with a long ball, with the keeper flooring Baldock and giving the referee no choice but to award a penalty.

Kanyuka was carried off to complete a horrific debut for the former Swindon man and Mk Dons striker doubled his tally by smashing home the spot kick.

The 1000 or so travelling fans may have made a short journey of 16 miles to get to the game but they would have been wishing they hadn't travelled after seeing their side suffer a collapse of epic proportions.

Ian Sampson obviously had to issue some hairdryer treatment at half-time and it almost paid immediate dividends as Davis cut in from the right and fired a low shot at Gueret who did well to save and grasp the ball as it went loose.

The Dons were inevitably looking a little cocky and they were given a sharp nudge when Luke Guttridge's fine free kick from the right was expertly headed in by Steve Guinan.

Suddenly the travelling fans behind the goal were given renewed hope and they saw their side come close to a second goal as Andy Holt did brilliantly on the left only to see a lack of real presence in the box when it mattered.

MK DONS: Gueret, McCracken, Wilbraham, Baldock, Carrington, Gobern (Leven 80), Puncheon, Davis, Howell, Powell (Ibehre 77), Chadwick (Easter 71). Subs not used: Gleeson, Morgan

COBBLERS: Dunn, Rodgers, Guttridge, Hinton, Beckwith (Jacobs 77), Guinan (Akinfenwa 77), Holt, Gilligan, Mulligan, Davis, Kanyuka (McCready 26) Subs not used: Brown, Dyer

Can we now concede that the 'cup kings' burgeoning is at an end Lakey? Or shall we wait until after the Southampton game before we read the last rites over that particular prognostication?

I dont know what Game Ian Sampson was watching, but he sure was not at the game at Milton Keynes. The Cobbelrs were very lucky not to conceed a dozen goals, and they were nothing short of woeful. Just like the game on Saturday against Fleetwood the Cobblers were outclassed from the first minute to the last, its time Sampson faced facts and finds two Midfielders, 4 defenders and a striker with pace. How on earth Sampson does not play McKay is beyond me, you cannnot keep playing old farts up front who have no idea, and our better suited to a game of dominos, than a game of Football. Final point, I dont know who the reporter is who as penned this article, but even a one eyed dog could see there was well over 2500 fans from Northampton.

To put it bluntly, the Cobblers were played off the park in the First half and a cricket score looked a likelihood. There was a serious lack of real pace in all areas and the defending was shocking at times. Guinan's goal was well taken and well made but by then the damage was done and the home side were pretty much playing for the final whistle. The MK Dons supporters (with whom I was sitting) thought it was their birthday. I have rarely felt so embarassed.

No flair, mediocre and workaday. Don't blame the Ref Sammo. Dunn was lucky not to be sent off for his challenge that led to the penalty.

I was at The Dons game last night so I could write paragraph after paragraph of negative observations but I won't! Just two questions in any order you like...How does Hinton get in the team? and...How on earth is he captain?

A shocking fall from grace. What's the latest situation Mr Cardoza because our team is absolutely aweful! Paul Rogers has got to be one of the worst players I've seen playing for Northampton Town FC. And he's not much better than most of the others.

It pains me to say it but MK Dons are probably everything we hoped the Cobblers would be. I vowed never to set foot in Stadium MK but finally decided to take advantage of the generous pricing and take my four grandchildren - it has to be said the facilities are superb from the loos to the tannoy. Our team were shocking first half led abysmally by our captain, we were a little better than abysmal second half. I am still unsure of DCs long term plan for our club, the conspiracy theorists would probably tell you it would be to suffer a similar fate to that of Luton!
