Northampton Saints legend Pat Lam has been appointed the new coach of top New Zealand club Auckland Blues.
The former Franklin's Gardens skipper, who also played for the Crusaders and Newcastle, agreed a three-year deal to replace David Nucifora at the Super 14 franchise.

The 39-year-old had been coaching Auckland in the Air New Zealand Cup, leading them to two championship titles and one play-off spot, while he was the assistant coach to the Scotland side for the 2003 World Cup.

"I am very proud of the achievements of the Auckland provincial team and have relished my role as coach for the last four years," Lam said.

"However, I have aspired to coach a team in the Super 14, ideally the Blues. That opportunity has arrived and I am delighted."
