New head of performance Nick Johnston says Saints are two years behind the fitness levels of the top six Guinness Premiership sides.
Johnston has delivered a blast of realism to Saints fans after their double-winning unbeaten campaign in National League One.

Johnston, who was snapped up from Sale, is totally revamping the medical and strength and conditioning departments, and has put together a gruelling pre-season programme ahead of Saints' return to the top flight.

But bookies make Saints fourth favourites to go down at 5/1, and Johnston, pictured above, said: "This to me is a three-year plan.
"These guys are two years off the top six fitness levels in the Premiership.

"We've got a long way to go but I will get them better.

"If I don't I will lose my job."

Johnston says he has used stats gained from the top clubs in the Premiership to drive the players.

"I think the players know exactly where they are at, we haven't allowed any complacency after last season.

"They have been shown data as to where they are."
