Jim Mallinder will be looking for his Northampton Saints squad to have a severe French test when they get their season underway on Saturday.
Saints play their first pre-season friendly against Clermont Auvergne in Vichy and director of rugby Mallinder says the game will be the kind of test his players need in the build-up to the Guinness Premiership.

Clermont Auvergne finished top of the regular Top 14 season table and their squad includes internationals such as Alex King, Aurelien Rougerie and Pierre Mignoni.

"For the past few years they have been right at the top of French rugby and regulars in the knock out stages of the Heineken Cup," said Mallinder.

"We have a squad that features several new players and I am looking forward to seeing them in action for the Saints against top class opposition."
