Former Northampton Saints centre Marc Stcherbina led from the front as Newport Gwent Dragons opened their EDF Energy campaign with a 25-14 defeat of Newcastle.
Stcherbina captained the Welsh side to victory and also scored a try as the Dragons fought back from behind midway through the second half.

Ex-Newcastle captain Colin Charvis produced a super-sub display as he marked his first senior appearance this season by delivering a memorable second-half performance.

The Dragons trailed 14-13 when Charvis appeared as a 52nd-minute replacement, and he created a crucial try for substitute wing Tom Isaacs.

Charvis, Wales' most capped forward in history with 94 Test match appearances, stole possession in midfield, then delivered a stunning one-handed pass to Isaacs, who sprinted clear.

Newcastle, who recovered from a poor opening period to lead through wing Ollie Phillips' touchdown, had no answer to Charvis' class.

And it meant the Dragons enjoyed a successful start to their EDF Energy Cup campaign, as centre Stcherbina and impressive fly-half Jason Tovey also scored.

Tovey added two penalties and two conversions for good measure, giving him a personal tally of 15 points.
