Former Northampton Saints prop Simon Emms has signed for Midlands Two East outfit Ampthill after saying he was suffering a severe case of "itchy feet".

Emms, who retired from professional rugby in May to concentrate on his career as a chartered surveyor, has been tempted out of what has been a short-lived retirement by Amps' forwards coach Stuart Evans.

The 33-year-old said: "I've known Stuart Evans, who is one of the coaches there, for a very long time and am good friends with him. He asked me what I was doing.

"I kind of retired last season and when the season started I got itchy feet and I spoke to Stuart and he asked if I could help out.

"I didn't miss the pre-season training. I enjoyed the summer off for the first time in about 15 years.

"I thought I had packed it in but then I saw the games on telly and I got a bit itchy.

"People tell you you're a long time retired and it's probably true.

"I wasn't able to commit to a semi-professional set-up."
