Northampton Saints new signing Ben Foden has been picked for England as full-back despite leaving current club Sale Sharks because he doesn't want to play in that position.
The 22-year-old, who has left Sharks for Franklin's Gardens, has been named in the England Saxons squad for the Barclays Churchill Cup.

And head coach Steve Bates says he will play at No.15 despite the player himself opting for Saints because he sees his future at No.9.

Foden, who had an outstanding season in the Guinness Premiership, caught Bates' eye when he turned out for the Sharks in last month's encounter with Newcastle Falcons, where Bates also oversees proceedings.

"Ben looked a class act when Sale played Newcastle, very physical and quick." said Bates.

"He's been picked at 15 because that's where he's been playing – and playing outstandingly well.

"I know his aspirations lie at scrum half and certainly he'll give us cover there.

"But I didn't feel it was fair to pick him at nine when I haven't seen him play there.

"It will certainly be interesting to see how he goes, he's a very exciting prospect."
