Swimming: Ben smashes county record
Ben Green smashed a Northamptonshire junior record on his way to a 100m freestyle national qualifying time as Northampton Swimming Club saw plenty of good performances at Leicester.
Swimmers from the South Northants squad competed for the first time under NSC colours following the successful merger of the clubs and Green's impressive performance was one of the highlights.
The 14-year-old raced home in 54.87sec to beat the county junior record of 55.39sec set by Luke Pearson in February 2004.
A number of other Northampton swimmers also set national qualifying times in the City of Leicester Swimming Club Open Meet at Braunstone Leisure Centre.
Charlotte Milligan, 13, won a full set of medals as she registered three national qualifying times. She won gold in the 200m backstroke in 2min 27.01sec, silver in the 400m freestyle in 4min 34.29sec and bronze in the 200m IM in 2min 29.53sec.
Georgina McManus claimed two national qualifying times as she took bronze in the 100m freestyle in 1min 01.23sec and silver in the 200 IM, where she just pipped Milligan in 2min 29.51sec.
Lauren Betts, 11, gained her first national time in the 400 IM in 5min 35.56secs, while Freddie Little set his qualifying time in the 400m freestyle in 4min 17.68 as he swam to gold.
