Swimming: Bell's triple gold as Northampton shine

Charlotte Bell claimed a magnificent three gold medals as young competitors from Northampton Swimming Club collected a host of medals and national qualifying times at the Midlands District Youth Championships.
Rachel Langford, Jack Johnson, Kimberley Bell and Emily Key all swam long-course qualifying times, while Kimberley Bell and Emma Herd also claimed gold medals in the pool at Coventry.

Charlotte Bell, a pupil at Prince William School in Oundle, claimed gold in the 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley and 200m butterfly to complete a superb day for the Thrapston youngster.

Northampton High School pupil Kimberley Bell, 17, swam to victory in the 1,500m freestyle, while Campion School student Herd also won her 1,500m freestyle age-group.

Langford and Johnson claimed their national qualifying times in their 400m IMs, while both picked up bronze medals in the 200m butterfly. Key registered her time in the 100m freestyle.

Charlotte Bell also claimed silver in the 100m butterfly, with other Northampton swimmers finishing second being NSB student Fraser Bovey, 16, in the 200m IM, Georgina Lockwood, 15, in the 100m freestyle and Key, 16, in the 50m freestyle.

Also winning bronze were Sophie McBain, 14, and Georgina Lockwood, 15, in the 50m freestyle, as well as the men's 200m freestyle relay of Johnson, Ben Green, Myles Crouch-Anderson and Bovey.

NSC director of swimming Mark Perry, who has been in Seville with the British open-water swimming team, said he was delighted to learn of the efforts in Coventry.

"The swimmers rose to the challenge magnificently," he said.

"I was delighted to hear that Rachel Langford had gained her national qualifying time as she is a swimmer who always gives her best in training and thoroughly deserves to have achieved at national level."
