Northampton cyclist Ben Swift missed out on a world championship under-23 medal by the smallest of margins as he finished a fantastic fourth in Varese.
Despite feeling unwell the 20-year-old worked hard at the front throughout the 173km race, which included 40km of climbing.

But he was just pipped into fourth place as the breakaway group sprinted for the line in a race won by Fabio Andrei Duarte of Colombia.

Home favourite Simone Ponzi took the silver and Germany's John Degenkolb just saw off Swift.

A member of the GB under-23 Academy based in Tuscany, he has won in the Coppe della Pace, the GP Coppa Roma and a demanding stage of the Giro Valle d'Aosta Mont Blank.

He was also member of the GB quartet that won the European under-23 Team Pursuit on the track.
