There is a need for 26 new schools in Northamptonshire over the next five years, a new report says, as the county swells by 40,000 homes.

Last month the Chron announced that an academy trust called REach2 had its bids to build a 630-place primary in Collingtree and a 420 place school in Moulton approved, as part of the eleventh wave of free school applications.

But the county council has now revealed the next two waves of free school applications for the county.

Cabinet papers show there are plans to build 26 new schools from now until 2021.

They include plans for a school for children aged between four and 11 in Duston, and a primary school at Buckton Fields to cater for the 1,000 new homes there.

Bids have also been put in for new schools at Upton Park, Norwood Farm and Upton Lodge - all three would be to cater for around 3,000 new homes planned for the west of Northampton.

Remarkably though, with around 40,000 new houses expected to be built in and around the town by 2021 - the total applications would still fall four schools short.

Northamptonshire County Council’s school organisation plan for 2016 to 2021, set for discussion at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, outlines the number of schools needed to meet the growing population.

The document reads: “Initial indications are that 25 new primary schools and five new secondary schools will be needed to support housing development, plus additional SEN (Special Educational Needs) capacity and extensions at existing schools.”

In addition, the council says it has seen a “bulge” in the primary school cohort in the last five years, which will create extra pressure on the secondary school sector from September 2016.

By 2017, the county will have added 13,853 new primary places, 2,475 secondary places and 380 special school places through a combination of new schools and extensions.

Data shows schools in Northamptonshire currently cannot meet the required five per cent of spare capacity, required by the Government.

There are currently 507 total places in primary schools, so allowing the recommended buffer for those applying for a place during the year would require an additional 25 places.
