Nathaniel Soares, 26, of Ashfield Road, took a knife into Aqua nightclub in Silver Street, Kettering, on October 18 last year and used it to threaten one man and stab another.

Northampton Crown Court heard a man walked into the nightclub toilets and saw Soares standing “motionless”.

James Armstrong-Holmes, prosecuting, said Soares asked the man, who he did not know, ‘Do you think I’m a joke?’.

The court was told the man tried to placate Soares but he got a knife out of his bag and then held it to the victim’s throat.

Mr Armstrong-Holmes said it was held there for “30 to 40 seconds” before he then began hitting the man on the cheekbone with the handle of the knife.

Soares then turned and walked out of the toilets towards the bar.

Soares’ second victim, who was standing near the bar, was stabbed in the stomach after he asked Soares to move out of the way so he could get to his drink.

Mr Armstrong-Holmes said the victim felt a “scratch” and then looked down and saw blood was dripping on the floor.

The wound was about one-and-a-half inches deep and required three stitches.

Police were called to the nightclub and Soares and another man, who was found in possession of the knife used in the stabbing, were arrested.

Soares pleaded guilty to charges of wounding, assault and possessing a knife in a public place.

The court heard Soares has previous convictions for affray and assault.

Her Honour Judge Adrienne Lucking said she must impose an extended sentence as she believed Soares posed a risk to the public.

Soares was sentenced to four years in jail for the wounding, 13 months for possession of the knife and four months for assault. All the sentences will be served concurrently.

Judge Lucking also imposed an extra year on licence. Soares must serve at least two thirds of his four year jail sentence before he can be considered for parole.
