Today his friends and other volunteers have started looking for Emmerson at Bradlaugh Fields and Abington Park.

Katie Garner, 16, said: “He was bright and just a normal boy. We’re upset, gutted and stressed.”

Katie’s mum Karen said: “This is totally out of character for him. He’s never done it before. There was no sign of him being unhappy.

“We’re helping to search for him and handing out leaflets to everyone we see.”

Katie, who has known Emmerson since being at Barry Primary School with him, has also set up a Facebook page to help find her friend.

So far more than 800 people have joined the group.

Emmerson, who has just completed his GCSEs and is due to turn 16 later this month, is due to return to Weston Favell Academy in September to start his A-levels.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Behan, from Northampton CID, said: “We are extremely worried about Emmerson and would ask him to get in contact with the police or his family.

“We would ask people to call us if they know where he is or if Emmerson has been in touch with them and we would also urge members of the public to keep a lookout for him.

“Currently we have around 30 officers assigned to trying to find Emmerson and we are concentrating our efforts on a search area within a small radius of his home in Stimpson Avenue. This includes a search at Weston Favell Academy where he is a pupil.

“We’d like to thank the media and to the public using social media for the tremendous response to our appeal last night.”

While they were concentrating efforts locally, he said the police had received unconfirmed sightings of Emmerson in Wales and Birmingham.

Emmerson, who often visits Abington Park, is white, about 5ft 5in, slim, with short hair.

He was last seen wearing a blue jacket, blue jeans, black Converse boots and he was carrying a rucksack.

Anyone who has seen Emmerson or knows of his whereabouts is urged to call police on 101.
