A WONDER dog has made the world of difference to the life of a multiple sclerosis sufferer.

Tracey Kesterton, aged 46, from Spinney Hill, Northampton, who has suffered from the illness for around 25 years, was introduced to black Labrador retriever Lewis just over a year ago.

She was paired with Lewis, who will be three this month, through the Canine Partners charity which provides assistance dogs for people with illnesses like hers.

Tracey, who has no feeling in her right hand and struggles to stand up and walk, said Lewis helped her to get up in the morning, brings her shoes, keys and mobile phone when it’s time to go out and even helps to empty the washing machine and picks up anything she has dropped.

She said: “Lewis really has changed my life. He’s brilliant. I couldn’t do what I do without him. He helps me to cope with my illness and, as it gets worse, I can train him to adapt and learn new things so he can continue to help me.” Tracey, who moved to Northampton three years ago, said; “I live alone and having Lewis here gives my family piece of mind. If I fell I know he would be here to help me. He makes my life so much easier. He’s also good company for me. I am so glad he’s here.”

Tracey, who had a pet dog when she was a child, said Lewis not only helped her through physical strains but could also sense if she was upset.

She said: “My boyfriend died in February and I didn’t want to get up from bed each day, but Lewis bounded in every morning ready for his walk.

“When I was crying he wouldn’t take his eyes off me. He was absolutely brilliant and helped to get me through it. Dogs really are man’s best friend.

“If I’m having a bad day, Lewis helps me to get through it. He’s a little character.”

Andy Cook, chief executive officer of Canine Partners, said: “Tracey and Lewis are a wonderful example of a strong working partnership.

“I am constantly amazed by the difference our dogs make to the lives of people with disabilities.

“We are striving to continue training as many dogs as we can to serve the growing demand for assistance dogs.”
