The area around the front of the store has been cordoned off and the neighbouring Clinton card shop on Abington Street has also been evacuated. The Grosvenor Centre entrance to BHS is also closed off.

Mounts station manager Kevin Denham, currently at the scene, praised the BHS staff for a speedy evacuation.

He said: “It appears to be a contained fire in the oven of the kitchen. For BHS and the staff, the evacuation was really good.

“Our firefighters used breathing apparatus to gain access to the kitchen.

“We are going to remove the oven from the kitchen to make the area safe.”

Mr Denham said the store would likely reopen by around 2pm.
