Around eight caravans and associated vehicles arrived at the Racecourse park at the weekend, setting up near the dipped area.

Five days on, the encampment is still spread widely across the football and rugby pitches there.

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire County Council said officers for its Countywide Traveller Unit have been to the park to speak to the people camped there.

Attempts at persuading them to relocate have failed, however, and the council is now drawing up a court order to move them on as the Racecourse is public land.

The spokeswoman said: “We expect they will have until 10am tomorrow morning to move on, otherwise a forced eviction will take place.”
