A set of traffic lights at one of Northampton’s busiest junctions failed yesterday because contractors building the new university campus damaged the mains.

Yesterday, motorists were advised to approach the junction where Cheyne Walk and Bedford Road meet with caution, after the four-way traffic lights there failed.

Engineers were called to he scene and the lights were back up and running by around 12.45pm, after many drivers had to edge out into the busy junction and make perilous turns in front of oncoming traffic.

However a spokeswoman for Western Power Distribution says the reason they stopped working was down to contractors, who were working on the University of Northampton’s new Waterside campus.

She said: “It appears contractors damaged one of our cables, which caused the traffic lights to go.”
