A thief who stole a computer from a vacant house in Northampton that was being cleared out because the owner had died has been locked up for 22 months.

Jack Watt, aged 20, of Oakley Street, Northampton, was arrested on January 2 after he was found in possession of a computer that had been stolen from a house in Bailiff Street.

Northampton Crown Court heard the owner of the house died in December 2014 and the property was being cleared out by his daughter.

Rachel Law, prosecuting, said the theft was believed to have taken place sometime between December 30 and January 2 when the daughter was away from the property.

By pleading guilty to theft, Watt was also in breach of a suspended sentence order he received last July after he was convicted of burglary.

Recorder Adrian Jack sentenced Jack to serve 18 months of his 21-month suspended sentence and a further four months, consecutively, for the theft.
