A student from Northampton has won a national schools table tennis title.

Alex Ramsden, 16, who attends Northampton School For Boys, won the Under-16 Singles title at the Butterfly English Schools Table Tennis Association Individual Finals in Wolverhampton.

The top seed won his group and made his way smoothly through the knockout stage to face second seed Matt Leete in the final.

At two sets up, it looked as if he was cruising, but Matt stormed back to force it into a fifth, which Ramsden shaded to complete a win by 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 3-11, 11-9.

It was a first individual schools title for Alex, who has won several Table Tennis England national championships and represents England.

He said: “It means a lot to me. I had to dig in to win it after being 2-0 up and him coming back.”

Ramsden will be looking to add more honours at the National Junior Championships in Huddersfield this weekend.
