Sunderland can spring surprise
SUNDERLAND are firing under new boss Martin O’Neill and look amazing value at 8/1 to beat Chelsea on Saturday.
The Black Cats are in fine form since O’Neill took charge, winning five of his seven games at the helm so far.
In contrast, Chelsea’s form has been well below their usual high standards with two wins in their last six – one in the FA Cup against Portsmouth and a 2-1 win at Wolves.
On this form alone, it makes the 8/1 on Sunderland win or 15/4 on the draw look very attractive indeed.
With it taking place at Stamford Bridge I’d expect Chelsea to have more than enough firepower to score, and I also like the look of Ladbrokes’ offer of even-money on both teams to find the net.
Liverpool are the new favourites for the Carling Cup after a 1-0 semi-final first-leg win at Premier League leaders Manchester City on Wednesday night.
As a result, City are now as big as 11/4 to win the Carling Cup having gone into Wednesday night’s game as the odds-on favourites. That mantle has been handed onto Liverpool, with Kenny Dalglish’s men now a best of 8/13 to lift the trophy at Wembley.
Crystal Palace, who beat Cardiff 1-0 in the first leg of the other semi-final on Tuesday night, are a best of 10/1 with the Bluebirds a point bigger.
It’s fair to say Tottenham are playing some of the best football in the Premier League right now and head into the clash with Wolves on a high having closed the gap on leaders Manchester City to three points following Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Everton.
It’s now four wins and two draws in their last six league games and they certainly have momentum in the title race with both City and United slipping up recently.
Harry Redknapp’s men are now as short as 6/1 to clinch the Premier League crown but if they’re to go the distance this season then they simply can’t afford to make a mess of home games such as the fixture against Wolves tomorrow.
And so far Tottenham haven’t been doing that, only dropping points at White Hart Lane against Manchester City and Chelsea.
So I’d fairly safely expect it to be a straightforward triumph against a struggling Wolves side, who haven’t won since beating Sunderland on December 4.
Tottenham are more than capable of knocking a few past Wolves without reply and you could do far worse than backing them at 2/1 to win by three or more goals.
HIGH-FLYING Southend United have lost two of their last three away games but are still big 6/5 favourites to beat the Cobblers at Sixfields tomorrow.
Aidy Boothroyd’s side go into this one on a massive high after securing a much-needed and deserved 2-1 win at Morecambe.
This performance alone should encourage plenty of Town fans to back their team to make it two on the bounce at tempting odds of 5/2 (Stan James).
