Northampton Borough Council should buy all or some of the existing student accommodation when the university moves to its new campus, according to opposition councillors.
Labour will ask the Conservative administration at the next council meeting in December to buy the blocks at Park Campus when they become vacant in a few years’ time.
Councillor Danielle Stone, leader of Northampton Labour Group, said: “The University of Northampton is due to move to its new Waterside Campus in the coming years. However, the question then arises what to do about the current Park Campus on Boughton Green Road. There are currently proposals to place 800 or so houses on there.
“I’m not necessarily opposed to this housing development, although the roads need to be improved, but I think the student accommodation could be used by the borough council to ease our local housing crisis.
“We have a high proliferation of HIMOs in the town, some rough sleepers and the council using bed and breakfast as emergency accommodation. Surely we could make use of this accommodation? I want the borough council to look seriously into the possibility of acquiring it,” Councillor Stone added.
