"The man was taken to Northampton General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."

Father Oliver Coss of All Saints Church was greeted with a pool of blood on the steps of the piazza at 7.45am on Sunday morning.

He told the Chronicle & Echo that there was police tape by the former Fat Cats bar and an officer on duty.

He said: "You get a sense of how big it was. Somebody must have lost about half a pint of blood, when I arrived it was quite fresh."

Father Oliver said he feared it would not be too long before a more significant incident takes place.

A spokeswoman for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We sent a fast response vehicle and an ambulance which took the patient to Northampton General Hospital, and the call was received at 4.50am."
