Seven Northampton Town fans arrested after alleged assault on 61-year-old at Coventry away game

Two Northampton teenagers were arrested on suspicion of wounding after a group of Cobblers fans allegedly set upon a 61-year-old man before Northampton Town and Coventry City clashed in League One.

In total seven Northampton Town fans were arrested in relation to the incident, outside the “Buffs Club”, in Foleshill, just by the Ricoh Arena.

West Midlands Police were called to the social club at 2.30pm on Saturday, after reports a 61-year-old Coventry fan had been assaulted.

Officers arrested a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man on suspicion of wounding. Both were from Northampton and have since been placed on police bail pending further investigation.

Four other Cobblers fans, aged between 17 and 26, were arrested on suspicion of affray and have also been bailed.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and released without charge.

Witnesses claim a glass or a bottle was used in the alleged assault, however police could not confirm this officially.

The victim was taken to hospital with injuries to his face and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Spokesman for the Northampton Town Supporters’ Trust, James Averill, said: “If this has happened then it is very disappointing.

“Cobblers fans have a very good reputation when we are travelling.

“We are not used to this kind of thing happening.”

A spokesman for Northampton Town, said: “We have been made aware of an alleged incident that may or may not have involved some of our fans prior to the fixture in Coventry last weekend.

“It is obviously too early to comment on the matter as we are not yet in possession of all the facts.

“As this was an away fixture we are not directly involved in the policing, stewarding or running of the event, but we will be assisting the police in any way possible in their investigation as and when required.”
