Staff at a Northampton Co-op were tied up by balaclava-wearing robbers who then went on to haul cigarette off the shelves and steal cash from a safe.

Northamptonshire Police is appealing for witnesses to the robbery at the Co-operative store Main Road, New Duston, at 6.30am yesterday.

A force spokesman said two men entered the store wearing balaclavas and tied the hands of the shop assistants.

They then demanded to know where the safe was and proceeded to take a “quantity of cash” from it. They also took a large amount of tobacco products.

The police spokesman said staff were left shaken by the incident and the force is now appealing for any witnesses to contact 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 with any information.
