Local people should control expansion

When is Daventry District Council going to stop boundary dumping? Here in Moulton we face the prospect of another 350 houses being built this year!

Where will the traffic go? The traffic in Moulton is appalling, most days the village is gridlocked. Redrow, the builder, says there will only be 65 more cars on the road (where do these people get their figures?) I think it will be at least 300 cars and at least two journeys a day.

The schools are full and there is a two week wait for a doctor’s appointment with some people unable to join our local practice.

When it rains, the drains can’t cope, with water gushing down the road. What would more houses do?

We have grass snakes, skylarks, thrushes and linnets living in the fields around our village. When they go, they go forever if their habitat is destroyed.

What has happened to the government policy of local people in charge of expansion in their area or is it that money and a fast buck will always come first?

Going backwards with hygiene

It was reported by the media this week that three babies had died of an infection in a Belfast hospital and that the bacteria is contagious and the hospital authorities are trying to find the source of the infection.

I cannot understand why the cotton sheets and towels used in hospital wards are not sterilised by boiling as they used to be. The low temperatures recommended by the Government/soap powder manufacturers to reduce energy do nothing to kill the germs that will be on the soiled sheets. They may look clean and stains removed but they will still be contaminated by certain bacteria. Even disinfectant manufacturers do not claim that 100 per cent of bacteria will be killed by the product. Boiling for 10 minutes will!

I do think the winter vomiting illness and other hospital infections could well be spread by the lack of boiling sheets and towels.

Other ways to prevent the spread of infection is to incinerate “germy” items such as soiled disposable nappies, paper hankies, etc. I do not believe used paper hankies should be put in the bin where bacteria will multiply, but should be flushed down the toilet or burned. Also, soiled disposable nappies should not be sent to landfill; they should be incinerated.

For all our “hi-tech” modern lifestyle I fear we seem to be going backwards as regards to hygiene.

Councillors must unite

In reply to the anonymous text regarding my letter to ViewPoint Work together, if the texter had read my letter properly he or she would see I was making the point the leader of the Lib Dems should not be calling the council arrogant when they themselves were probably the most arrogant ruling council in years. Regarding the demolition of an entire housing estate, they would not and did not listen to the people, just carried on regardless of anyone’s feelings.

As far as being the one who signed the Conservative candidate for Eastfields’ nomination last year, yes I did and would do it again. If they have a problem with that then tough.

At least I have always signed my letters to the Chron, I am not ashamed of who I support and still make my point, if you are concerned about the wellbeing of Northampton work together.

Club is at least taking action

I read Pam Varnsverry’s letter last Saturday with a great deal of interest, not least because she is going on like people are still listening!

The voters of Northampton had their say last May, and they emphatically voted the Lib Dems out, a damning report card. So why would she think they are listening now?

Yes, matchday parking and traffic is an issue, but where were the Lib Dems in trying to get all parties around the table and sorting it out? Nowhere, that’s where. The rugby club may have its faults, but at least they tried out a traffic management trial scheme last season, which is better than nothing.

Instead Mrs Varnsverry kept going on about opening the Claret Car Park without proposing how you’d get the thousand or so extra cars out of Edgar Mobbs Way in a reasonable amount of time. And actually while she said a lot about opening the Claret Car Park did she manage to get it open on match days in all her time in office? No!

When the Gardens is expanded – and the Saints have been clear as to when they expect this to happen – there will be more match traffic, but I expect this will be a part of the planning application.

Speaking of which, why does Mrs Varnsverry think the Saints would be able to magic up a planning application the day after an election? Why would they spend money on putting together an application based on a Tory win, only to have had to change it were the Lib Dems somehow to pull it out of the bag?

The Saints have assured the public they will be putting a planning application in sooner rather than later, at which point I hope Mrs Varnsverry will eat her words.

Town needed development

Pam Varnsverry seems to have lost the plot completely in her letter of Saturday, January 21! Were we really to expect the Saints to put a planning application in the day after last year’s election? It’s a big development that involves several different companies and organisations, and at the best of times it would have taken some time to put all the different parts of a planning application in place.

But the Lib Dem policies stopped the HCA from being able to talk, and it’s fair to assume the club and the HCA were only able to start being productive once the new Tory administration had backed the Saints.

That was only a few months ago, but the Saints management have already stated when they’re going to put a planning application in and when they want to build the new stand, which is more than they were ever able to say when Mrs Varnsverry and the rest of the Lib Dems were in power.

She says the Lib Dems would have had to have circumvented planning law. But why are we to believe her? ASDA was never going to spend money on a planning application while iot was not going to be able to build a store thanks to the Lib Dem “Town Centre First At The Expense Of Everything Else” policy. And it’s only when the application is submitted we find out whether it adheres to planning law.

Instead, Mrs Varnsverry and her Lib Dem friends stopped a multi-million pound development at a time when the town needed it most. And their attitude stopped the Saints expanding when they wanted to, the result of which was a game being played in Milton Keynes at the weekend which would otherwise have been at the Gardens.
