April 20: So sad to see the state of our park
I was glad to see the tent campers have left Delapre Lake. Shame about the mess, but it seems these people have no sense of responsibility, especially if help has been offered.
I love walking my dog at Delapre, but it makes me sad to see the state the council let it get into.
How nice it was tidied up with a track leading down to the lake where wheelchairs could let people fish or just sit and enjoy.
On Easter Monday, I was at the lake watching 23 tiny mallard chicks swimming.
The next minute one of the two speed-boats plus towing skiers, tore through them and the other water-birds. They don't stand a chance.
This lake is too small for these boats. People commented on the fierce back-wash hitting and therefore damaging the banks.
Last summer, this action piled up weed all round the lake which then dried out. I know that speed in boats on the broads and canals is strictly regulated to prevent damage to the banks.
What a pity the borough council does not care enough to protect these few areas of beauty that so many walkers use and enjoy.

Too slow to move illegal campers
THE homeless people camping in Delapre Park have moved on. Fantastic news . . . but one thing that concerns me is the comment from Councillor Glynane, who stated in part of his interview "the borough council will not have people camping in their parks".
If this is the case, why were they not moved on earlier?
After all, there has been a camp of some form or other around Delapre lake for well over 12 months and if they had moved on earlier the mess would not have been as bad.

Police should hide speed cameras
Regarding Mr and Mrs Underwood's letter on April 16, sadly speeding does not apply to Chapel Brampton alone and there is not a village in Northamptonshire that does not suffer from vehicles of all sizes speeding through.
Northampton itself is no better. Some drivers just want to get from A to B as fast as they can and to hell with anyone who gets in their way.
I say bring back the old-fashioned way of catching speeding vehicles . . . the police officer behind the wall or hedge with a radar gun where he or she cannot be seen. See how many they catch.
Also, do away with advertising where the mobile safety cameras units are going to be sited.
Some drivers will never follow the rules of the road. Speed limits mean nothing to them. If you drive at 28mph in a 30mph area, vehicles tailgate you, even more so in 20mph areas, which are 24/7 not just during school days.

Three excellent shows in 10 days
IN the last 10 days, I have been to see and hear three musical events, the first of which was The Sound Of Music at Spinney Hill Hall, the second was Lesley's Dancers at Hackleton village hall and the last was
Olivet To Calvary at Park Avenue Methodist Church.
At all of these shows, not only were the vocal soloists and dancers excellent, but also the supporting singers and artistes. Congratulations to everyone who took part.
I should add that, at Spinney Hill Hall, it was a joy to be in an auditorium where eating and drinking were prohibited.

Where are these cheaper homes?
SO this is how the local government now sells the rape of rural beauty with new development, by using existing residents' fears that their children cannot be housed nearby unless they consent to the building of "affordable housing."
I'm still not convinced that this is the genuine motivation for these developments. It's my guess that it's more likely that there will be a bigger profit margin for rural development, hence more fruitful benefits for the council from the developer's pocket, the kind of things that our ever-increasing local taxes should be covering.
I've had connections with Bugbrooke for over 40 years and I remember the promises from previous developments that there would be housing suitable for young people. But I haven't met many young people who can afford 200k or more.

I'm not a Chelsea Pensioner!
FOR my friends and acquaintances who have watched the TV programme about ex-service women joining the Chelsea pensioners in their barracks, I wish them to know that I am not the Dorothy Hughes who is named as the first lady to join the men in Chelsea barracks. I am still in Duston!
