Tributes have been paid to a Northampton primary school teacher who has died after suffering from a rare form of lung cancer.

David Rose, aged 42, who was a sports teacher and year five leader at East Hunsbury Primary School, died on Friday after being diagnosed with adenocarcinoma lung cancer in June.

Rita Arundel, headteacher at East Hunsbury Primary, said all the staff and pupils had been left shocked and saddened by Mr Rose’s death.

Dozens of flowers and tribute cards have been left outside the school in memory of the teacher who had worked at the school for 10 years.

Mrs Arundel said: “He was just a fantastic teacher and colleague and will be greatly missed by everyone.

“He was really loved by everyone at the school by pupils, staff and teachers alike. He was a really inspirational teacher and a fantastic male role model as he taught the pupils it was cool to be clever and work hard and never give up on yourself.

The headteacher said Mr Rose had been an extremely healthy man and had never smoked, which had made it so tragic that he had died of lung cancer.

Mrs Arundel said: “He all enjoyed all sports and he regularly went to the gym. He was not afraid to try his hand at any sports.”

A number of ex-pupils have left tributes to Mr Rose who leaves his wife Dorothee and 10-year-old daughter Anastasia.

Mrs Arundel said: “The number of tributes the school has had shows how much Mr Rose will be missed.

“He will be greatly missed by everyone and our thoughts are with his family at this time.”

A book of condolence has been set up at East Hunsbury Primary School which former pupils and or anyone who knew Mr Rose is welcome to sign.

Headteacher Rita Arundel said pupils had been asked to come up with ideas for a permanent reminder of Mr Rose at the school.

Pupils were told about Mr Rose’s death during an assembly held on Monday. Staff were told on Friday and parents were told the news during the weekend.
