Discount supermarket chain, Lidl, has said the development of a new store in Northampton would create 40 jobs .
The firm plans to build a shop in Gambrel Road, close to the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Sixfields.
During a public display of the plans yesterday, Rachel Hargreaves, from Lidl, said: “Within the Duston area there’s not much of a choice of shops at the moment.
“There is Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer is coming, but they are obviously high-end, more expensive shops. So we’re trying to create more of a mix.”
Plans for the development, which would be on the current site of some industrial units, are due to be submitted to Northampton Borough Council in the next couple of weeks.
Mrs Hargreaves said: “Of the 40 jobs the development will create, there will be everything from cleaners to managers and we’ll try to recruit people from the local area.”
Plans for the multi-million-pound development have also been welcomed by many shoppers.
Duston resident, Urho Makinen, who attended the public display of the plans last Thursday, said: “I think it’s a great idea. I’ll be very happy if they do build a store on this side of the town.
“We do shop at Sainsbury’s, but at least once a month we go to the Lidl on the other side of Northampton, so this will be a lot more convenient.”
Lidl currently only has one store in the town, at Weston Favell.
