Plans to create six flats above the Greggs sandwich shop in Abington Street are due to be approved tonight.
The development would feature a block of offices above the bakery and two neighbouring shops converted into four one-bedroom and two two-bedroom flats.
Documents submitted to Northampton Borough Council by the building’s owner, Steinberger Developments, said the offices had been empty for some time.
They said: “The upper parts of the building have gradually become vacant due to the changes in demand and economic climate and at present, all of the upper floors are vacant, despite active marketing.”
There are currently very few residential spaces in the heart of the town centre, but officials have been keen to push town-centre living through the development of schemes such as the new student flats which are currently being built on the former St John’s open air car park, close to the Royal & Derngate Theatre.
If approved, the development would be subject to a series of conditions.
