Louise Mensch has resigned as MP of Corby and East Northamptonshire after finding it increasingly difficult to juggle family responsibilities with her political career.
Mrs Mensch, who won her seat in 2010, is stepping down from her role and will now move to New York with her three children to live with her husband, Metallica manager Peter Mensch who is based in the city. She married him last year after the breakdown of her first marriage.
She said that every effort had been made to ensure she could stay in her role, but she had ultimately made the tough decision to ensure the welfare of her family.
She said: “I am completely devastated. It’s been unbelievably difficult to manage family life.
“We have been trying to find a way forward with the Prime Minister’s office but I just can’t spend as much time with my children as I want to.”
An official announcement will be made nationally at 10am today but Mrs Mensch wanted her constituents to be the first to know of her resignation.
Mrs Mensch added that she had planned to move after the next election in 2015 but was concerned that her children would be too settled in East Northamptonshire and it would be unfair to uproot them at that stage. Instead, she has decided to wind down her constituency affairs now, and a by-election will be held on November 15 at the same time as the police commissioner elections.
She added: “I love Corby and East Northamptonshire but my family has to come first.
“When I took the post I was in a different position but sometimes life throws you a curve ball that you didn’t expect.
“We are now going to be moving out to New York as a family.
“Every family is different and another mother might feel she can manage things.
“It’s been an honour to represent the people of Corby and East Northants and I will miss them.”
Mrs Mensch has successfully kept her children out of the limelight during her high-profile political career and they will enjoy further anonymity in America.
The author recently launched her own social networking site menschn.com, as a rival to twitter where she has 100,000 followers. She is now expected to concentrate on building the popularity of the site.
Louise Mensch was elected MP for Corby at the 2010 general election with a majority of 1,951, defeating Labour incumbent Phil Hope, and in June 2010 she was elected by other Conservative MPs to serve on the Select Committee for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
On July 19, 2011, Mrs Mensch took part in the questioning of James and Rupert Murdoch over the News of the World phone hacking scandal.
In June 2011, she married Peter Mensch, the manager of Metallica, Jimmy Page and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Prime Minister David Cameron said Mrs Mensch had been an “inspiring” MP and hinted that she had been in line for a role in the Government.
He said: “It goes without saying that I had wished to see you serve for longer and at a more senior level.
“But you have made a tremendous contribution in the short period you have served in the House of Commons, and have much to be very proud of.”
