A supermarket has applied to alter its plans for the former gas holder site in Northampton.
Lidl, which is set to build on the Towcester Road site near B&Q, had its basic application approved in July 2014.
But a new application, if approved, could see the supermarket footprint extended, with the option of adding a cafe or hot food takeaway.
It would be an increase of 1,000 sq m2 over and above the previous floorspace approved.
Guildhall planning officers have indicated their approval, saying the impact of such extensions on businesses in the rest of the town would be minimal.
The planning committee report states: “In respect of the retail impact, it involves a limited range of goods but a larger format store which allows more space for customers to manoeuvre and greater numbers of individual product lines.
“This means that in spite of the larger floorspace, the impact on the town centre would not be increased to an unacceptable degree.”
