In last Thursday’s edition, Anglian Water announced that it was going to tackle numerous sewers based around the town at a cost of £1.5millon.

Anglian Water should have really concentrated their actions upon the blocked storm drains, sewers and kerbside drains based in the estates affected by the Easter 1998 floods. Although the Environment Agency said the floods were “ a once in 200-year event”, the estates are in a flood plain and have been hit seven times in the past 125 years or so. If the appropriate drain system is not properly cleared and, most importantly, kept clear, the Waterside Enterprise Zone will be ruined and £14.5-£15billion of taxpayers money will be sent down the Nene.

The local career politicians and quango employees are really showing that they are out of touch with the borough’s real needs and the electorate’s expectations. They must remember that the electorate hold the power to vote them in and out of office and pay their wages.
